Data Sharing Requests

From the Explore Data menu, identify the private sequence you want to access.

  1. Check the line corresponding to the sequence.
  2. Click REQUEST.
  3. Enter a message for the data depositor.

The data depositor will receive your request by email. They have one month to approve. After this period, the request is automatically deleted.

Dataset access requests and Closed Working Duo

Users can request access to a dataset owned by another user.

Access request behavior

When a user sends a dataset access request:

  • The request is sent directly to the dataset owner
  • If accepted, a Closed Working Duo is automatically created between both users (see Closed Working Duo)

This group is strictly limited to two members and cannot be extended.

Eligibility conditions

Dataset access requests are only available under strict ownership conditions:

  • The dataset must be owned by a single user
  • All sequences within the dataset must be owned by that same user
  • The dataset owner and the sequences owner must be the same user

If the dataset contains sequences from multiple owners (a “patchwork dataset”), access requests are not allowed.

This ensures that full access can be granted without violating individual ownership rules.

Data sharing scope

Once the request is accepted:

  • The entire dataset is shared between both users
  • All sequences included in the dataset become accessible
  • This includes:
    • sequence metadata
    • FASTA data
    • all associated sequence content

Unlike standard dataset sharing (see Data Sharing), this process ensures full access to all sequences, regardless of their original visibility state.

Key principle

Dataset access requests create a direct, fully shared collaboration space between two users.

This mechanism is designed for secure, one-to-one data sharing with complete access, while preserving strict ownership rules.

DOI

Usage

A DOI (Digital Object Identifier) makes a dataset citable and traceable; often required by funders and journals.

Technical behavior

  • Eligibility: stable dataset, clear license, complete owners and metadata.
  • Minting: Arbogen sends metadata to a DOI agency and stores the returned DOI.
  • Landing page: the DOI resolves to a platform permalink showing citation, license, and downloads.
  • Updates: major new versions may receive a new DOI; minor updates are tracked in metadata.
